Quick answer
Gelatin is halal only when sourced from halal-slaughtered animals (zabiha bovine) or from fish. Porcine gelatin is never halal. Most gelatin in commodity US supplements is porcine-derived.
The three main gelatin sources
- Bovine gelatin (cattle) — Halal IF the cattle were slaughtered per Islamic zabiha standards AND the facility holds halal certification (IFANCA, ISA, JAKIM, or HFA). Generic "bovine gelatin" without certification is unverified.
- Porcine gelatin (pigs) — Never halal under any conditions.
- Fish gelatin — Halal by default (fish do not require ritual slaughter). Less common but increasingly available.
Why most supplement gelatin is porcine
Porcine gelatin is the industry default because:
- It's the cheapest source ($1-2 per kg vs $5-10 for halal bovine)
- Easier to obtain in industrial quantities
