Athletic Greens (AG1) is one of the most-marketed greens powders in the US wellness market. It's also not halal-certified, which leaves Muslim consumers wanting the AG1 experience without a direct option.
This is an honest look at why AG1 doesn't carry a halal certification, and what to look for if you want a greens powder that does.
Why AG1 isn't halal
AG1 contains 75 ingredients including multiple botanicals, mushroom extracts, probiotics, and digestive enzymes. The product is not halal-certified, which means none of the following have been verified for compliance:
- Capsule excipients in the encapsulated ingredients (magnesium stearate sourcing)
- Probiotic strain processing (some are processed with animal-derived growth media)
- Mushroom extract carriers (alcohol vs. water extraction)
- Glycerin source (animal vs. plant)
- Facility cross-contamination with non-halal products
None of this means AG1 contains specifically haram ingredients — it means the verification work hasn't been done. For consumers who want certainty, halal greens are the alternative.
What to look for in a halal greens powder
- A named certifying body — IFANCA, ISA, JAKIM or HFA. "Halal" with no body named is marketing.
- No proprietary blends. A greens powder that hides amounts behind a blend name is hiding sub-clinical doses.
- Probiotic strain and CFU stated, not just "probiotic blend".
- Capsule or carrier disclosure if encapsulated, and the flavour carrier if flavoured.
Does ZMZM make a greens powder?
No. We do not currently make a greens powder and we have no launch date for one. We would rather say that than point you at something we do not sell.
What we do make, if the underlying goal was daily energy and focus, is Ceremonial Matcha (one ingredient), NAD+, and Ashwagandha Plus. Each states every ingredient and dose on the page, and any sourcing question we have not closed is published at ingredients.
Frequently asked questions
Is AG1 halal?
AG1 is not halal-certified. The product doesn't contain explicitly haram ingredients on the label, but the certification work to verify halal compliance (capsule sourcing, processing aids, facility audits) hasn't been done.
What should I look for in a halal greens powder?
A named certifying body, no proprietary blends, stated probiotic strains and CFU, and disclosure of the capsule or flavour carrier. Breadth of ingredient list matters less than whether the doses are stated at all.
Can I just take a multivitamin and skip greens powder?
A multivitamin covers vitamins and minerals. Greens powders also include phytonutrients (chlorophyll, polyphenols), mushroom extracts, digestive enzymes, and probiotics that a multivitamin doesn't. They serve different purposes.
When should I take greens powder?
Best taken on an empty stomach for maximum absorption. The Fajr window (pre-dawn, fasted state) is the optimal timing in the Barakah Schedule framework. Mix with water.
Is there a halal version of AG1 specifically?
Not from AG1 directly. The closest options are smaller halal brands offering certified greens powders — look for a named certifying body. ZMZM does not make a greens powder.
